School Bells For Jerry Amal Dev

Twenty five years back, we had a Jassi Gift of that time, named Jerry Amaldev.
By the melodies songs in the film Manjil Virinja Pookkal he swept the minds of audience. His all the songs were hits.
And he of course got the state award for best music director . After that he was flooded with numerous offers. The soft spoken ,naive gentleman accepted all the offers without thinking twice. But many of the films never released. But he could repeat the success in Nokkethaa Doorathu Kannum Nattu, Poovinu Puthiya Poonthennal,Ente Mamaattikkuttiyammakku etc .
Even when the films were not released, his songs began to make waves. Kattupothu is only one example. But today he is outcasted from Malayalam film scenario.
Why?
The million Doller question has only one answer:
Yesudas.
In an interview he dared to tell straight that the voice of Yesudas was not male according to Europian standards.
Except for some music experts, the readers as a whole surprised and taken aback by this comment. It is altogether another matter that, the magazine being of tiny circulation, the interview was not read by many, and never become a popular talk.
But the damage was done.
Yesudas had got embarrassed by the comment. And he pledged to never sing again with Jerry's tune. And for Jerry, that decision proved to be much more than disastrous. During those days it was impossible for Malayalam film industry to do away with Yesudas. But the industry could very well afford to avoid Jerry.
Thus the scene was set for the downslide of Jerry Amaldev. Jerry, who was a music tutor at an American University at that time, suffered much. He got little offers.Could do only some background scores, and some of them got some awards too.(His his score in Kazhakam defeated Ilayaraja's tune for Kalapani in the running for state award.).
But Jerry was eventually getting limited to the status of a devotional music director.
And were Jeery is today?
He is at Choice School, Kochi.
Teaching school students music.

Will his students repeat his success ?

This is a real example of our great talents are treated in our industries.
Yesudas mgt be a great singer for us.But doesnt mean whole world shuld accpet his sound.Moreoevr what jerry said is what he heard from Europeans.Thsi isnt the way how great talents should be treated.
Pathetic industry. He should be recognised because he is the one who gives birth to a song. Not the singer.

Jerry Amaldev is a musical genius and a highly talented person. He deserves a good position in the film industry. His yesteryear hits still haunt us. The ego of one person should not deny the film industry and the malayalam audience of the services of a great music director. There is still time to undo the damage. let us hope for the best from Jerry in the coming days. We'll wait in hope.

This is a sad event both Jerry an d Yeshudas are from the same community. Yeshudas is trained in clasical Southindian Carnatic tradition. Where Jerry is a Hindustani musician who trained in western classical music. Very few indians except a Zubin Mehta are of this calibre. Maybe Jerry should have been diplomatic. But, then past is past I think is these 2 unite there is going to be magic even though both are advanced in age. Will anyone say Vijay Yeshudas has a great voice ? Sad but true. Jerry simple tunes and orchestration and Yeshudas's lilting voice should find us the audience again. Please burn your egos at some fireplace. Let the listners be enthralled with an encore.

Michael Jackson's voice weren't a male voice according to that standard. Yesudas has a great voice but he was a Bully. He bullied young upcoming singers, music directors, directors and producers. 80's and 90's malayalam music industry couldn't function with out Yesudas. people refuse to listen anyone else. Yesudas&his tharangini were big Monoply. he refused sing for Directors who dare to use any other singers.

Yesudas never bullied any upcoming singer. But as always any new aspiring singer can put the blame on him for not getting chances, that is the industry's fault, not Yesudas's fault. People will listen to any song which is good irrespective of, who is the singer. But the producers, financiers and distributors won't take chance. I am a 73 year old music fan, saw the career of Yesudas's career. Yes, Tharangini was his, when he has a recording studio, he would insist recording there, there is nothing wrong. All producers once wanted Lataji or Rafi saab to sing their songs. Once Janaki for recording, she saw 16 year old Chithra who sang the track, liked her singing and requested the director and producer to let her record it, but both refused, Chithra cried, and finally Janaki sang, but consoled the latter by telling that she would get chances soon. That's life, do not blame Yesudas for everything. Jerry Amaldev shuld not have made that comment.
